Stardock DeskScapes

by Kairu on Apr.24, 2010, under Theming, Windows

Continuing my adventure into modifying the normally tame look of Windows 7!

So, I had my windows and start bar modded, and a lot of other parts of Windows, but what about that desktop?… Well, something else I remembered from the good old days appears to also be compatible with Windows 7 now! DeskScapes! (continue reading…)

Custom Nethernet Toolbar V1.1

by Kairu on Mar.17, 2010, under General

This post is simply a landing page for a custom Nethernet toolbar, where I can put warnings, information and such. For those of you that do not know what The Nethernet is, check it out here.

I have a solution to the “half an event notification” issue most users using Firefox 3.6 have experienced. But please, read through the entire post before installing! (continue reading…)

Windows 7 Themes

by Kairu on Mar.04, 2010, under Theming, Windows

Last night, after watching some NCIS, I looked at my computer screen, and decided it needed a revamp. I am a man of simplistic taste when it comes to my themes. The default Aero is nice, and a slight color change to the darker side of the color pallet kept me happy for a few months, but last night I decided to break out my old Object Desktop subscription.

Things have changed since the last time I used anything from Stardock, and I was surprised to find that they have retired the old interface for program management, and have replaced it with Impulse, which is a very nice change. The new interface is very visually pleasing, easy to navigate, and they have integrated a lot of things that, in my opinion, have always been lacking. One example is the icon in the system menu. And we are back!

by Kairu on Mar.01, 2010, under General

Or more specifically I am!

Might have noticed (Or not noticed) that kairubyte.com was gone for a little while there! A little mess up on my part, and then a rather annoying mess up on the part of the DNS company I registered my domain name with. Apparently I could add any sub-domain I wanted, but could not tie an IP into the main domain name.

I looked over everything, and wasn’t suprised to see that I had about 50 spam comments that the spam checker caught! I find these things particularly amusing, as most are bots that crawl around that pretend to be humans. This one in particular made me laugh: “In truth, immediately i didn’t understand the essence. But after re-reading all at once became clear.”

I suppose I really do need to write something else up here…. But it’s late. I need sleep. Maybe tomorrow. Or some other day after.

Windows 7 -> 64 bit -> Cybernetic Implants

by Kairu on Nov.05, 2009, under General, Windows

I got myself a free installation of Windows 7 Professional (Thank you MSDN access), and I must say it has been running exceptionally well. Very few compatibility issues, no problems installing most things. Vista drivers all work as well.

The only incompatibility I have run across with Windows 7 is my colleges refusal to let systems running it onto their network, which makes little sense to me, but if they want to make life more difficult, it’s up to them.

While the OS was still in Beta, there were many issues to do with compatibility.  Drivers wouldn’t work in some cases, and programs such as DaemonTools would not work, though that was a given to begin with. And of course I was testing the 64bit edition, which is just a whole new issue. But that isn’t the fault of Windows 7.

Eventually everything is going to have to go 64 bit. It’s the way of the future after all. Most high end programs require a lot of memory to run, and to be honest anyone into high end gaming needs more then 3.4GB of ram. We are going to have to use 64 bit systems to remedy this. Software developers will just have to follow suit and start supporting them properly. I’m sure most people don’t realize it, but 32 bit is starting to become the new 16 bit. It’s just how things go. Years from now when games are Terabytes in size, we will look back and laugh at the games that only required 10GB. For the most part, I’d say gaming is going to push the bar. Of course this is just a tired collage students opinion. After all, maybe one day we will hit a quality level that cannot be surpassed, and we will move on to storage. Of course, one day we will all just wirelessly connect to the internet with our brains and interact with the content we have stored in a small device embedded in our brains. A day my girlfriend dreads.

Which brings up an interesting question. Given the choice, would you allow a licensed and qualified person to install a computer into your head, and connect it directly to your brain?

Wisconsin anyone?

by Kairu on Jun.30, 2009, under General

I am once again planning a long trip to Wisconsin. In fact, I am going to be away from home for an entire month, and I am not just going to Wisconsin. I am also going to Florida!

I am leaving on the 18th, from the toronto airport, and spending approximately two hours on a plane on my way to Chicago. From the O’Hare airport, I will take the subway to the train station, where I will take the train to meet pet.

I will spend about two weeks in Wisconsin, before I take a long drive down to Florida to stay at a beachfront house with my girlfriend and her extended family. The area is gorgeous, and I cant wait. From the pictures I have seen, the place is not only huge, it is beautiful. And I believe there is also free wireless. Which is good, considering my iPhone wont be getting it’s data connection over there, and I would be roaming. I doubt those prices are reasonable.

The plane tickets are all set and paid for, my ride is confirmed. Come Sunday July 18th, I will be in Wisconsin enjoying the company of my girlfriend.

On Saturday Aguest 16th, I will be returning! Hopefully things will go smashingly! I havent seen pet in months, and I know she has been missing me.

iPhone 3GS Jailbreak?

by Kairu on Jun.30, 2009, under Jailbreaking, iPhone, iPhone 3GS

Yes, for a while now, I bet weve all been wondering if the iPhone 3GS can be jailbroken, and it turns out it can! Personally, I was holding out on buying one of these wonderful phones, partially because I am short on money, and do not have any upgrading available on my contract, but mostly because being able to jailbreak the phone is just that important to me!

The jailbreak has not been released yet, as Dev-Team doesnt want to tip off Apple about the bug they are using, but they say it will most likely be releasd after the next iPhone OS upgrade. One peice of info which is influencing me to go out and get a new iPhone, is that once you have your ECID (Unique Chip ID) you will always be able to jailbreak your phone, no matter what. The downside is that if you do not get your ECID, you may not be able to jailbreak for a while.

Personally, I am checking my available funds, and calling up my provider the second I hit publish! What are you going to do?

KairuByte, Now with ads!

by Kairu on May.22, 2009, under General

I finally got those ads up. Took me a while I know, but apparently this exact same site didn’t meet their standards a month ago, so I sent it in again today. Not an hour later, and here we are!

It’s a pretty ingenious thing. I didn’t realize how easy it was beforehand. Basically, you just set up an account, submit valid info (Obviously, how else are you going to get money?), and wait for them to review your website. If it passes, your good to go!

You choose the size of the adverts from some pre-determined sizes, choose some other settings, like exclusions and color scheme, and before you know it your all ready to go! Put the code into your HTML, reload the page and voila!

And since FeedBurner is now Google owned, you can seamlessly integrate adverts into your feeds! I should have been doing this a while ago!

If your interested in getting advertisements on your website, check out Google AdSense.

In other news, I’ll stop neglecting this blog soon! I promise! I pinky promise!

About the New Server!

by Kairu on Mar.30, 2009, under General

Ok, new isn’t really the right word. I guess improved would be a better choice.

It has more ram, a more powerful CPU, and I cut out all the fat from the OS. The hard drive has gone down in size significantly, but I’m using the best parts from my old systems! (They actually make a fairly decent gaming PC, but I don’t need a spare)

That being said, for the time being, the load times will be a little slow. I have not had time to optimize the system. I still have useless stuff running in the background sapping away at the RAM and CPU power.

Obviously, I am using WordPress for my blog. I’m going to end up editing stuff, and potentially building my own from the ground up, but for now this suits me just fine. For now I am going to focus on rebuilding the tools I lost in the destruction of my previous server.

Over the next week, I will probably get ads up. Yes, we all hate them, but it is a necessary evil. Between collage and bill payments, I need all the help I can get keeping this site running. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure it’s all decent.

For now, I gotta sign off.

Third times the charm?

by Kairu on Mar.30, 2009, under General

Well, this time I’m hoping I will actually keep up with my blog. As my third “official” blog I guess I am going to pay more attention to it. it’s hosted on my main server now, so it’s more in my face.

Anyway, what I’m going to be blogging about? Well, a few different things. Such as my slow ascent into Wii Homebrew, my life as a Gaia Online Moderator, and other general stuff, like server work and maybe a few video game reviews. Who knows?

Not much going on. Just got my server up and running after my last one got fried (thank you nosy brother with no sense of personal boundaries), so all the code which I publish over the last few months is gone. Caput. This includes my favorite utility, the dynamic image generator.

That will most likely be my first and foremost piece of code to resurrect. But this time I think I will add a GUI to it, and probably a few other features.

For now, just working and getting all the money I can. I’ll post again when something interesting happens.
